DL&A Associate: Sheila Ramsey, Ph.D.

Sheila Ramsey is known internationally for her work in the field of intercultural relations, international leadership development, team training and the facilitation of individual and group creativity and innovation. Dr. Ramsey is a skilled facilitator and consultant with 25 years of experience and has worked with many diverse groups. Her forum for this work has been in the corporate sector, education, and in the not-for-profit arena since 1975. Dr. Ramsey has a Ph.D. in communication as well as a background in theater and anthropology. Her training and consulting is focused on enabling clients to utilize their creativity, and unique abilities to develop workplace effectiveness, and global partnerships. She developed the program Leadership for the International Professional, which focuses on theory and practice in international leadership. In addition, with Deena Levine, she developed Creating and Sustaining Effective Work Groups and Teams, a program designed for individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Dr. Ramsey was an Assistant Professor of Communication at International Christian University in Tokyo from l977 until l981. Upon her return, she joined Clarke Consulting Group, focusing on Japan-U.S. relations, where she served as Training Director until 1987, when she left to work as an independent consultant in intercultural relations and international management. She has also served as adjunct faculty with Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba, Japan, George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, and The Elliot School of International Diplomacy of George Washington University in Washington D.C.

Clients in the United States have included: Amdahl, Applied Materials, The US Census Bureau, Chevron, Dupont, The Federal Executive Institute, Fujitsu America, George Washington University-School of Management; Hewlett Packard, Hitachi America, IBM, Intel, The US Department of Justice, Kodak, Memorex, Motorola, National Semiconductor, NEC, Partnership for Child Health Care, Inc., Procter and Gamble, The US Peace Corps, Rohm and Haas, The US State Department, The Smithsonian Institution, Spectra-Physics Lasers, The Sutter Hospital System of California, The University of Washington Hospital System, The US Peace Corps, The US State Department and Western Electric. Dr. Ramsey has designed and implemented major large-group strategic planning events, international leadership-development seminars, intercultural technology-transfer projects, multicultural work-force development seminars, team-building and total quality management designs, trainer and consultant professional-development sessions, and orientation for overseas-living programs. For seven years she was on the faculty of the Summer Institute in Intercultural Communication in Portland, Oregon and is a Senior Fellow of SIETAR, (Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research) Japan -Tokyo Branch. Her publications are in the areas of nonverbal behavior, training methodologies, communication-style differences between Japanese and Americans, and creativity, and managing change.

Dr. Ramsey has also worked as a professional photographer and as a potter's apprentice in Mashiko, Japan. She is a certified teacher of the Enneagram of Personality, a philosophy and approach to personality development applicable to both personal and professional contexts. Dr. Ramsey resides in Washington, D.C.
