DL&A Associate: Anat Kedem, M.A.

Anat Kedem was born and raised in Israel, and lived in South Africa and the United States. Her experiences outside of Israel and her re-entry into Israeli society shaped her cultural perspective on Israeli culture and triggered her interest in the nature of the cross-cultural encounter. Within Israel, she worked within the rifts dividing Israeli society, assisting Israeli Arabs, new immigrants and Americans. As a consultant and trainer in Israel, she worked with government and non-profit clients, focusing on internal diversity within Israeli society and its impact on organizational effectiveness. In this role she created, developed and implemented a cross-cultural and diversity curriculum and trained cross-cultural trainers for the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). As a supervisor for Youth Aliya, (an organization dealing with youth immigration to Israel), Anat designed and led seminars on cross-cultural communication for students and staff. She led a large-scale cultural intervention from the planning and designing stages to the implementation stages, heading a multi-cultural staff.

Anat is an experienced professional in cross-cultural training and facilitation with over 12 years of experience. She has an M.A. in Education and Training from Haifa University. The foundation of her cross-cultural knowledge comes from the Cross-Cultural Training Program at the Open University of Tel Aviv, headed by Lucy Shahar, the pioneer of American and Israeli cross-cultural work. Anat specialized further in facilitation and coaching skills through Group Facilitation Training at TELEM in Tel Aviv and the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland in Cape Cod.

As a cross-cultural organizational consultant, she has worked in diverse settings and industries in a wide range of roles. Her experience spans both the private sector with hi-tech companies such as Intel, Motorola, Dialogic, Orbotek and Amdocs and for government and non-profit organizations. With Lucy Shahar in Israel, Anat worked within the corporate world assisting global teams. She designed and facilitated workshops related to employee international relocation, multicultural team formation and management, as well as global cross-cultural business effectiveness, focusing on American-Israeli interaction. In 1998 at the SIETAR (Society for Intercultural Education Training and Research) Europa Congress in Bath, England, she co-presented a workshop entitled "Are Our Heads Wired Differently? Co-Training with Colleagues From Another Culture." She assisted in the development of a diagnostic tool centered on the cultural learning process, aimed at helping Human Resource professionals, trainers and internal consultants meet the needs of their clients.

Anat and her family relocated to the United States 4 years ago. Thus, her fourth expatriate experience, in Silicon Valley, has provided her with further opportunities to draw on her knowledge of cross-cultural issues, particularly as they relate to Israeli and American contact in the business world. Anat's insight into both American and Israeli cultures contributes to global professionals' abilities in communicating and navigating across cultures.
